Stingy GMs
Just wanted to share with the blogosphere that I got called the stingiest DM that one of my players ever gamed with. Funny because I use the wealth charts in the books. Makes one wonder what's really out there eh? It is no secret that I am against monty haul games but I try to at least let the players have something. The intrinsic problem IMHO with dnd in general is the need to have all of these different magical items, weapons, gears and who dads to get anything done. Oh sure magic is cool and all. I mean what would The Seeker be without his Sword of Truth and where would Authur be without Excalibur or Harry without his wand. The thing is do they really need to have a magic item in every slot? If magic is that plentiful then why doesn't everyone have it? Shouldn't a housewife be able to use it to clean her house up? Shouldn't it be available to everyone? Why doesn't the priest use raise dead on his best parishioners? This is why I instituted the slotted weapon idea in the Dragonlance game. To keep the monty haul down to a minimum. Oh sure there is magic in the world but when it becomes so plentiful that you get something magical at every encounter is it really all that magical anymore?

Maybe rather than finding the magic sword in the treasure chest, the players find the magic sword on the other end of an angry gnoll who's dead keen to stick it where the sun don't shine in the players? Make them work for their magic do-dads, and they should know that creatures they meet know how to use these things, too.
ReplyDeleteKobold that's a given in my games. Very rarely do they find unclaimed treasure unless they are in ancient ruins. I mean what would keep the farm boy from finding the magical dagger if it were just laying around? Also I like to use undead so there's not much treasure for zombies. Let's face it.
ReplyDeleteLOL - maybe the players should be working on tearing section Z out of the monster manual, rather than complaining about the level of treasure.
ReplyDeleteMagic items in D & D kind of run into the same problem as the "hussy" in a soap opera. You have to come up with new people for the "hussy" to cheat with/on and after a year or two the character has been married 47 times, raped twice, kidnapped, committed three murders, been abducted by aliens and that just covers the Friday shows. Since you have a new episode every day the events must be kept going.
ReplyDeleteSimarlarly with the party there is a new adventure every other game session and each adventure's close requires some kind of rewqard to peak interest. Eventually play the characters enough and they need a magic encyclopedia in order to be able to index the bags of holding containing the magic items to the monster they are useful for fighting.

ReplyDeleteLOL - A Jane's Fighting Ships for magical items? What about Bigby's Thaumatic Codex WITH Illuminations?
